Freelance Whales - Weathervanes CD review

Freelance Whales - Weathervanes CD review

Indie / Folk

The album starts off with my favorite track - "Generator ^ First Floor", which was the reason for this review. I heard this song on the new starbucks commercial. Very reminiscent of Plushgun's "Just Impolite". There was an interesting mix of instruments including banjos, bells, and whistles. The catchy loops of "Hannah" and "Location", also peaked my interest - a rather folky-like sound which reminded me of Sufjan Steven's Illonoise. The band's lead vocalist, Judah Dadone has the perfect tone for this type of music - both soothing and calming. The only thing this album lacked was creativity. It wore a heavy resemblance to many other indie artists. I found myself constantly comparing songs and styles with Death Cab, Sufjan Stevens, and The Postal service. All in all...

Rating: 7.5 / 10
